An Enfamil Formula to Help Meet Your Baby's Needs
If your baby's having a hard time with his or her feedings, it's probably because their little digestive system is still developing and may need some additional TLC. Fortunately, there's an Enfamil® formula designed to help meet these feeding needs.
For babies with mild feeding concerns like fussiness, gas, or spit up, and for babies who may be experiencing cow's milk and food protein allergies, Enfamil offers a selection of formulas to meet these needs. These formulas are formulated with Enfamil's blend of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid), nutrients found in breast milk that help in the development of a baby's brain, eyes, and immune system. Whatever your baby's feeding need, there's an Enfamil formula to help.
A Specialty Formula for Babies with Milk Protein Allergy
If your baby experiences excessive crying or appears colicky, this may be due to the regular infant formula they are drinking. Your baby could have an allergy or sensitivity to the cow's milk protein found in that formula. Nutramigen® with Enflora™ LGG®* has been specially designed to ease a baby's allergy towards a cow's milk based formula, so your baby can grow strong on the outside--and feel good on the inside. Ask your baby's doctor if this formula is right for your baby.
The Story Behind the Allergy
What causes a milk protein allergy or sensitivity? A baby's intestine is naturally immature at birth. As your baby feeds, whole proteins are digested and absorbed into the intestine. But occasionally, larger proteins can slip through the immature intestinal barrier.
In infants with a cow's milk protein allergy, these proteins are misrecognized as a foreign body, or antigen, which leads to an immune response, eventually causing the intestine to become inflamed. Prolonged inflammation allows for an increased transfer of antigens, causing more inflammation and discomfort for a baby.
Manage Cow's Milk Protein Allergy with the Power of Two
Formulas like this one, designed for infants with cow's milk protein allergy, use whole proteins that are extensively broken down to reduce allergen exposure and avoid an allergic response.
With the Power of Two, this formula not only has these broken-down proteins--it also has a probiotic that helps strengthen the intestinal barrier. Using the Power of Two, Nutramigen effectively manages colic due to a cow's milk protein allergy fast, often within 48 hours.
Recommended and Trusted
With over 65 years of proven performance, Nutramigen has long been recommended by doctors and trusted by mom to effectively manage cow's milk protein allergy. Now, with the Power of Two, it also has an extensively studied probiotic for allergy management.

The Scarlet Letter.

Formula Feeding Mom.

I've decided to switch from breast feeding to formula feeding. I know the benefits of breast feeding and I know that it is better for my baby and better for me and cheaper and just better in general. I have my reasons for switching though.

1. Amount of Milk: Because we were in and out of the hospital and had so much trouble feeding her during the first week-and-a-half, I am not producing enough milk.
2. Time: Trying to force myself to produce more, more, more, I was pumping so often that I couldn't do anything else. Luke and I are taking turns feeding her during the night for the weeks that we both have off work. I had to wake up every time anyway either to feed her or pump or both.
3. Contact: I can't feed her from the breast because she is a problem eater, and we have to monitor the number of ounces she eats at each feeding. I have to strictly pump and feed her from a bottle. That kind of eliminates the "bonding" argument. I am actually happier and able to talk to her and make eye contact with her better while bottle feeding.
4. Stress: Mental - Worrying about not producing enough milk and starving my baby had me in constant tears. I also had horrible dreams. Physical - Pumping so often trying to fix the amounts really hurt. It was really hard for her to latch on because of the shape of things, so we had to use a nipple shield and she had to work too hard and just got tired and went to sleep hungry instead of eating to contentment.
5. Amelia actually takes formula a lot better than breast milk, strangely enough.

I know that if I stuck it out for a while longer, I could get my supply to be sufficient and have enough for her. I just can't do it. I can't handle that kind of stress on top of a new baby and then going back to work in few weeks and trying to work out pumping there (in the shower room, hah).

It sounds like a bunch of excuses, and I guess that is exactly what it is. This is best for me and in turn best for my baby because of my mental and physical state while taking care of her. I do feel guilty for not breast feeding; she is missing out on immunities and not getting the stuff from me that can help in lowering her chances for breast cancer and diabetes and obesity and all of that. I feel better having made the decision though. My mom made me feel a lot better; she was very comforting. My brother and I were both breast fed and we turned out okay.

If you plan on preaching at me about breast feeding, please don't waste your time and mine. I have reasons and know the benefits. I've been doing a lot of research, and I've been to classes.

Mammaw and George.

Mammaw and George.

How is my baby two and a half weeks old now? I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through this time with Rob and Mom's monumental help. Recovering from delivery hasn't been a picnic, and I'm convinced it's the universe's joke that we have to be in so much pain as we deal with the steep learning curve of taking care of a high-maintenance newborn. Add to that the fact that breastfeeding isn't going well (four lactation consultations, one oral motor specialist, low milk supply, herbs and prescription medications, pumping, supplementing with bottles, people who go "Just switch to formula!" OH MY LORD this kid better be getting all those immunity benefits) and I am one tired new mama.

Which makes me appreciate my own mom that much more. Rob went back to work Monday and his thoughts of going back part-time at first didn't pan out, so I am exceedingly grateful my mom was able to be with me during the day most of this week. She held George when I desperately needed rest, gave him the bottles that made me want to break down into tears, ran errands for us, prepared wonderful food, and helped keep the laundry and other household messes from exploding. Who else but a mother, right?

So thank you, Mom. At a time when I am figuring out what kind of mother I want to be, I hope I can be as supportive of George as you have been to me my whole life.
