Baby Rylee Bath Time

Baby Rylee Bath Time

Just got this new set of props a couple of weeks ago, and this is my very first tester. I know it is NOT a perfect set. She was not very cooperative. She kept kicking the embroidered towels (so they are not aligned).

This was taken in my living room and I had planned to use natural light in front of my picture window. But I ended up not having enough space to move around. So I used my 2 umbrella lights and my built in camera flash (not the external). And this is shot against the green screen and background changed to black in processing.
Overall, I like it and think this is going to be one of my indoor settings that I will use the most.

Forever Girl

Forever Girl

One Mother's Love Letter to Her Daughter by Dori Hartley

Dear Valentine,
Years ago, as I reclined comfortably on an examination room table, an attendant jellied my belly with sonogram goo and, within a few seconds, I heard a sound I would never forget for the rest of my life: your rapid, sparrow-small heartbeat.

Even though the heartbeat was strangely distorted in it's muffled amplification, all I heard was life -- precious, vital life. There was life inside me -- a heart beating inside my womb! It was so hard to believe a human being's heart could beat that fast, but, then again, you were no bigger than a hummingbird at the time. Yet, there you were, alive, inside my body, making your presence known. You were undeniable.

When I first heard this manic, throttling little drum, I immediately and instinctively understood the power it would forever have over me, and I knew, also, that you would look to me as its source. Accepting this grand responsibility came as natural to me as breathing, and, before you were even born, I had already fallen deeply, unshakably in love with you.

I recognized the racing beat of your heart as the sound of love itself. And, at that moment, I knew you were my one true love, my valentine girl.

Months later, as I screamed and screeched you into this world, all the blinding pain that accompanied your birth was silenced the moment I saw your face.

Something dramatic was going on "out there" in that hospital room -- a big fuss was being made with heart monitors, forceps and doctors. There was craziness and faces were covered by blue masks. But you and I were already in our own little world. Nobody could touch us, nobody could enter.

Something intensely awesome had just occurred, something -- miraculous. Still, amidst the hysteria, we experienced a frozen moment in suspended animation: I touched you, you felt my touch and we both knew all the drama of the world would forever melt away in the bliss of this true love. My valentine was born. My forever girl.

I held you so tightly -- and didn't loosen my grip for years. I walked with you strapped to my body and dangling like a goofball in that Baby Bjorn, my back aching, my nose eternally sniffing the top of your sweet head. I'd know that smell blindfolded, even today.

As I watched you grow, my heart expanded with each new step you took. And every time you fell, I felt the pain in ways only a mother can understand.

Then, of course, there was that awful day the doctors misdiagnosed you with leukemia. They told me you were going to die if you didn't get immediate treatment, and all I could think of was, "No! My baby cannot be this sick. She's only 7 years old!"

I rode with you in the ambulance all the way from Key West to Miami Children's Hospital that horrible night. I held your hand as the tubes went in and out of your frail little body. You endured test after test, and I sat there, hiding the reservoir of tears behind my nervous fingers.

But you were so strong.

When the nurses brought you a selection of toys to keep you occupied, you smiled at me and said, "Wow, Mommy. I thought this was the worst day of my life, but now I know it's the best day ever."

One silly little toy was all it took to change your outlook. I almost crumbled in the face of your courage.

As it turned out, you didn't have leukemia at all, but an acute case of ITP, a blood disorder that occurs when the body is not producing enough platelets. Serious, for sure, but not leukemia-serious.

Still, my poor little boo. But it was nothing you couldn't conquer. You moved on, like the radiant pulse of energy and love that you've always been. You learned to read, write, act and dance. You think deep thoughts, groove on music, challenge me daily and surprise me constantly.

You are a survivor.

Every day my heart walks around outside my body. I miss you when you are at school, yet I delight in your independence. And, when I pick you up each afternoon, the second you park that 12-year-old body in the passenger seat next to me, everything in my life suddenly becomes better.

To this very day, when you walk into the room my heart beats for you. My only child. You're just a few months away from being a teenager, but, still, I never pass up an opportunity to check in on you as you sleep. Your face? Purity. Your breath is all the peace I will ever need in this world.

You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Your life has given me something I will never, ever lose. You've brought love into my life, a love that will never fade. You really are my true love, and, after all, isn't that what Valentine's Day is all about?

True love.
Happy Valentine's Day, my forever girl.

Before and After

Before and After

On January 11, which was 3 days before our due date, we hiked up to Elowah to shoot some photos of Ellie in utero. We had give the name "Elowah" a 99% chance of being the one at that point so we thought it would be neat to do a before and after shot. Andrea bared her belly in the 36 degree mist long enough for me to shoot 10 or so shots. Luckily a couple of them came out. The flow was so strong over the falls that when I'd take the lens cap off, the lens would be instantly covered with water. I had to take it off, shoot, wipe and repeat.

When we were at Elowah yesterday, the flow level had subsided a lot. We were worried that we wouldn't be able to get close to the falls with Ellie if there was too much mist. I wore my rain coat and put her in the Baby Bjorn underneath my jacket. In the end though, we didn't need it. The mist was minimal and the temperature was a nice 45 degrees. Some snow from our original shot still lingers behind the falls.

I really want to head up to the falls this summer when Ellie is a bit older and drink some wine and enjoy a nice summer day by the pool. I swam in the icy pool last summer so I can't wait to dip her feet into the water to see what she thinks of her namesake before she can express it verbally.

On a somewhat sad (hmm, maybe not) note, this will probably be the last photo I get to add to my pregnancy set, at least for the foreseeable future :)

baby bottle travel warmer - BambinOz Instant

BambinOz Instant Heat Bottle Warmer Pack

BambinOz Instant Heat Bottle Warmer Pack

The Instant Heat Bottle Warmer Pack is great for car, plane or train travel, shopping trips, a day at the beach and camping. Makes it easy to heat bottles anywhere, anytime, without batteries or electricity. It heats in 10-15 minutes and stays warms for an hour. Leveraging a technology which has been used widely in the sports medicine, camping and fishing industries, the pad provides a heat source that is reusable over and over. The heating pad contains a solution of water, a food grade sodium acetate (a form of salt) and a stainless steel disc. When you gently flex the disc (just enough to hear a click sound), this starts a chain reaction where the solution begins to crystallize and generate heat lasting up to an hour. Once the pad cools, simply immerse in boiling water for 5-10 minutes or until the solution becomes completely clear. The Instant Heat Bottle Warmer Pack is completely safe and non-toxic. It fits most bottle sizes and shapes and is completely portable. It comes with an insulated carry bag to keep liquids warm or cold until ready to use. The Bottle Warmer Pack is independently safety tested.

“Mom”, matriarch of the Front Porch Kats

“Mom”, matriarch of the Front Porch Kats

Rest in Peace, ole girl… you deserve it!

For as long as I can remember (10 years at least), there has been a small population of feral cats in my neighborhood, usually anywhere from 5 - 10 at a time. Completely inbred, they all look almost exactly alike: dark gray and black tiger strips, sometimes with a hint of orange. They have a fairly high mortality rate, mostly living in the woods across the road from my house, so they never really threatened to take over Wales Street. I could see them from my kitchen window and front porch playing and chasing squirrels. Sometimes they would meow at me when I went to the mailbox, but mostly lived quietly amongst the trees. About five years ago a couple of them got a little more curious, as cats will do, and started coming into my yard (unseen, they thought) to look for scraps of food I throw out ( I NEVER throw any food out with the garbage! The idea of any kind of waste, especially food, appalls me…). After a while I could go outside while they were around, and they kinda got used to seeing this big tall guy around. Eventually I started to put dry cat food on the porch by the front door to see if they would get that close to the house. It took a while, but sure enough they would come up and grab a bite. They even got brave enough (most of them, anyway) to eat while I stood on the porch with them. Over the years, I was only able to actually pet and hold two. One was a kitten, LittleBit, that had a broken leg. It was amazing to see him walk, run, and even jump up on the porch railing with others! I have no idea how he did it, but he did. Although he was a little fellow, he was one of the loudest purrers I’ve ever heard! The other one I called Stripey, because he was the only one of the entire clan that did NOT have tiger strips across his back. He had beautiful circular black and orange strips on his side which made it very easy to recognize him. I think he was also the father of most in the cat tribe.
The picture above is the one I call Mom. She has almost single handedly kept the group going for the past few years, having on average about 6 – 9 kittens each year. Don’t know where she gave birth, but after she got really, REALLY BIG, she would disappear for a few weeks. She would come back to the porch periodically for food, but then rush back to the woods to take care of the babies. After about three months of this, I would walk out on the porch one morning and a whole new family of kitties would greet me! She had brought the kids over to show them where they could always find a meal and water. The kids learned well, and never forgot where the free buffet was located! Can’t even remember how many times this scenario happened.
As I said, living (semi) wild like they do, there is a high mortality rate. Over the past 18 months or so, their numbers have steadily dwindled. Since last autumn, there has only been Mom and Junior, the last survivor from her last litter. Sometime Friday nite or early Saturday morning, Mom died after a brief illness; she got sick Monday and quickly went down hill from there. The Matriarch of the family is gone. She was a great mother to her many kids, and I’ll miss her.
Now only Junior remains of my Front Porch Kats. Don’t know if he will start a family in the woods or not (he hasn’t been around much since his Mom died). If he doesn’t, then my little extended family is gone forever. There will doubtless be other homeless cats in the neighborhood in the future, but I don’t think I’ll ever have a group quite like this again. It’s funny, in the early days of them coming into the yard, I tried to run them off, just didn’t want a bunch of strays around. Not long after that, I was feeding them on my front porch! Amazing how those little fellows will steal your heart, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it!!! ;-)

Goodbye, Moma Kat. I miss you aready…

16 Boring Things You Never Wanted to Know

16 Boring Things You Never Wanted to Know

Well, I've been tagged, so here are 16 things you never thought you needed to know about me (Little Me above).

1. I believe artichokes are only a vehicle for shoveling vast amounts of mayonnaise into my mouth.

2. As a teen, I was set on moving to England, living in a flat alone and being a writer/photographer/drummer. A few years later I got married.

3. I was in a commercial for a pharmacy several years ago. The back of my head was prominently featured after shooting (and waiting) for 9 hours.

4. I've had my poetry published in a few books and I hate poetry.

5. I never met a food I didn't like, except curry. No curry. Blech.

6. When I was 16 I wrote a letter to Morrisey of The Smiths proposing marriage. I even wrote the sentence "I don't care if you're gay." I have no idea why I never got a response. I sent a picture and everything!

7. I was Goth before there was Goth and I am very embarrassed.

8. I was five months pregnant when I got married. For the second time. To a different baby daddy than my first child. This is Jerry Springer stuff here.

9. I lost 15 pounds since September and I don't think they're coming back.

10. I still sleep with a teddy bear and always have. Shut up.

11. I yell because I care.

12. Sometimes, if there is no one looking and I have no floss, I have flossed my teeth with a piece of my hair.

13. I do not like men who are yappy or who talk too much. Nothing irritates me more than a guy with a pulse.

14. I love my kids and animals more than life itself.

15. If there are ever news cameras roaming about, I will be interviewed, even when trying to avoid them. I've been on the news so many times over the years and once sounded pretty smart.

16. My pinkie fingers are kind of bent.

Gee, aren't you glad you wasted those two minutes reading this? And no, you will never get those two minutes back.
